The Benefits of a New YOS/COS Report

October, 2020

The report that replaces the YOS/COS Infographic early next year will provide several major benefits to BBBS staff. Here is a summary of some of these benefits.

Address Shortcomings of Current YOS/COS Infographic

A few weeks ago, we published an article discussing some of the shortcomings of the current YOS/COS Infographic (click here to read this article). The report that replaces the Infographic will address all of these shortcomings. Specifically, the new report will include data on all of the question sets included on YOS and COS; whereas the current infographic only reports data on approximately one-third of the question sets on the surveys. The new report will also be much easier than the current Infographic for untrained staff to understand and interpret. And all of the background statistical formulas and constants will be updated to provide users the most accurate data possible.

The new report will make it very easy to download the exact raw data that is used for all reported outcomes

    Easily Access Raw Data

It is currently very difficult for BBBS staff to access the raw data from which the results shown on the YOS/COS Infographic are derived. The new report will make it very easy to download the exact raw data that is used for all reported outcomes. With a few clicks, users will be able to download a .csv file containing all of the report’s raw data.

    More Complete Baseline Data

The current YOS/COS Infographic relies on a single survey to provide all baseline data for a match. As a result, if a Little fails to complete a question set on their baseline survey or their baseline survey is a COS with fewer question sets, then the unanswered question sets are not reported on for the duration of the match. The new report will resolve this issue by having the first completed instance of each question set serve as the baseline measurement regardless of when a Little submits this question set.

Here is an example of how this will work. Let’s say a Little fails to complete the Grades question set the first time they take the YOS, but they do complete this question set the second time they take the survey the following year. Since the Little did not answer the Grades question set the first time they took the YOS, the current YOS/COS Infographic will not have a baseline measurement for this question set for this Little for the duration of their match. The new report, however, will use the data from the second time the Little took the YOS as the baseline measure for this question set. So, after the second year of the match, the Little will have a baseline measure for this question set for use over the duration of their match.

As you can see, the report that replaces the YOS/COS Infographic next year will have several benefits over the current report. The project team is excited to finalize the report and get it out to you. We hope you are excited to start using it as well.
